Manifesting good things: Comedy

Posted in Doing My Thang with tags , , , on April 9, 2009 by joedobo

Hello folks,

Long story short, we did it ya’ll! My fellow comedians (Edwin Li, Owen Morris, Marc Abrigo, and I) are now the official 4 San Francisco State University’s representatives for Rooftopcomedy.com’s National Stand-Up Comedy Competition!

To recap: Think of it like March Madness for stand-up comics.

Like Lil’ Mama says, “This is a competition…” So I’ll definitely need ya’ll help with voting. Click here to find out the how’s.

As for my thoughts on the night… It’ll probably help to watch the set I did first

Done? Cool.

Just some random thoughts about the night in general, in no particular order…

Packed crowd. Perhaps one of my biggest to date.

It was standing room only at the venue. With 16 comics with 5 minutes each, plus our excellent host, Reggie Steele performing in the beginning, and people paid $8 each to get in? That could have been a disaster if there were more bad comics than good…

My set on my birthday was much better and I wish I had a recording of that one, or of the one recently at Poleng.

You might have noticed some heckling in the background, although my boy Marc got it a bit worse. He handled it extremely well though. Personally, I was getting pissed and I let it throw off my delivery just a bit. Live and learn.

Subtle differences in the way I deliver lines (tone of voice, body language, etc.) can mean the difference between a good joke or great joke.

Audience sensitivity to the content of my material. Have a follow-up ready in advance in the event of sticks-in-the-arse audiences.

When I’m doing my last joke, about 20 seconds after I told the girl who yelled out the website after I mentioned the word “Cameltoe”, you might have noticed a break in the audio. That was because someone in the audience yelling, “FUCK YOU!” I completely ignored it because it was my last joke, and being that it was a competition, I didn’t want to stray outside my given 5 minutes.

Anyways, at the end of the day (or night in this case) I accomplished what I set out to do, and it feels good. One of the other comedians who was apart of the original 8 on our team is pissed that he didn’t make the final team. I feel for him, but to be honest, this competition isn’t the end all/be all of shit. I know all of us did what we thought was our best to prepare for the night, and for me, that included making peace with the possibility of losing, and being willing to lose gracefully. Remind me of this passage if I ever get on that tip.

Final thought semi-related:

I’ll be performing my first “headlining” gig at Poleng Lounge on April 28th in SF! Longer set, more time to have fun, but to quote Lil’ Mama again, “I got;s to BRING. IT.”

Vote for my team on the website ya’ll!
